IN CELEBRATION OF THE LIFE OF HAZEL CLAWSON - 9/13/05 to 10/30/06

Hazel arrived on 9/13/1905 as the fifth of six children in the loving family created by Ed and Josie Hosler. She grew up on a farm in southern IA. As valedictorian of her class, she received a scholarship for Parsons College for two years. Hazel then alternated teaching and attending Iowa State College graduating in 1929.

After she married Charles Clawson in 1930 they lived on a 113-acre farm in Ackley, IA. Although Hazel enjoyed all of her activities, she was happiest when working with her flowers, garden and orchard. Long before it was a more common practice, Charles and Hazel practiced organic farming and gardening.

Charles and Hazel had two daughters, Barbara and Virginia. Hazel was active in the Presbyterian Church in Ackley and was the first woman elected to the session. She also served her community through a variety of volunteer activities. In 1963 she was selected as Ackley’s Mother of the Year.

After Charles’ death in 1972, Hazel struggled to find meaning in life. God responded to her struggle by calling her to mission work in Xocenpich, Mexico, a small Mayan Indian village that had formerly been a Presbyterian mission. At age 68 she began a 25-year ministry spending 2-3 months each winter in Xocenpich serving as a housemother for the student nurses, making their uniforms, sewing for the hospital, teaching sewing classes, demonstrating gardening and distributing seeds to the villagers. During the summer months Hazel raised funds for the mission. Sharing her story in her daughters’ churches in IN and NC resulted in numerous mission trips to Xocenpich. Most important, however, was her love for the students and villagers and theirs for her. In 1983 Hazel received the Outstanding Elderly Presbyterian award from the Synod of Lakes and Prairies for her work in Mexico and her active involvement in her church and community during her “retirement” years.

In 1991, after she sold her home in IA due to diminished eyesight, she spent time each year with her daughters and in Mexico. In 2000, Hazel and Barbara moved to the Twin Lakes Community in Burlington, NC where she thoroughly enjoyed her remaining years.

Hazel’s life was an example of loving God and her neighbors, near and far. Her deep faith and positive attitude made her a joy to know.

Survivors include her daughters, Barbara Clawson of Burlington, NC and Virginia Achtermann of Columbus, OH, two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Pentacost Sunday

This coming Sunday is Pentacost, when we remember the gifts of the Holy Spirit and the birthday of the church. Everyone is encouraged to wear red. The scripture for Sunday is John 15:26-27 and 16:4-15.

How has the Holy Spirit been present in your life as a counselor?
